Under the elimination rule used by German proportional representation, parties with less than 5 per cent of the votes are dropped out of the reckoning.

On that basis the results for the UK’s recent election would be: Conservatives: 275; Labour: 229; Ukip: 92; Liberal Democrats: 54.
