‘Free’ schools not the answer

I WAS disheartened by the rhetoric being used in your story “Parents call for state school alternative” (News, June 16). Especially revealing was the comment from the leader of the New School Action Group: “This isn’t a bunch of middle-class parents who want to set up their lovely nice school.”

This, of course, is exactly what is happening and in a local authority where parents have been leaving state education for the private sector in their droves, because they have found local authority schools starved of resources and a commitment to excellence.

We need to concentrate on keeping children of committed middle-class parents in mainstream education not offer them a get-out on the cheap.
