Fracking works

The spat between Clark Cross and Roy Turnbull regarding fracking (Letters, 9 February) has its roots in a fundamental debate, which is do we want to disadvantage ourselves now, by reducing CO2 emissions, to avoid something that may or may not happen in the distant future, for the sake of future generations.

The answer has to be that the responsibility of government is to look after today’s people, many of whom are reduced to a daily heat or eat decision, brought about by academic theory about man-made global warming.

Future generations will probably be overcome by other world events anyway.

America has proved that fracking works. What other proof is required? Let us – for once – just get on with something that helps us now.
