Henry Kinloch (Letters, 27
November) says that he believes one of the reasons Westminster party leaders came north was because they realised that Scotland would be worse off with independence, but I would suggest it was because they knew that it was the rest of the UK that would be worse off if Scotland became independent.

The Standard & Poor’s agency has said that Scotland is richer per capita than Germany, France and Japan, and even without oil would merit a triple-A rating.

If this wealth stayed in Scotland it would mean that, far from being worse off, we would have one of the world’s highest standards of living but it would be a disaster for an almost bankrupt UK.
