Fit for the chop

David K Allan (Letters, 3 July) asks if MPs who accept the proposed pay rise are suffering from Marie Antoinette syndrome or are just plain greedy.

It should be remembered that large numbers of MPs spend their lives sitting on green benches, shouting abuse at the people on the green benches opposite, before retiring to one of the many bars and restaurants in the Palace of Westminster to enjoy a convivial drink. Anything further removed from the harsh realities of ordinary life in this age of austerity would be hard to imagine.

Out of touch, greedy, self-serving MPs who grab a salary increase won’t, unlike Marie
Antoinette, lose their heads.

But they should bear in mind that their employers have the power to give them the chop, nonetheless.
