Fishing interests

George Byron (Letters, 20 August) is incorrect to conclude I suggested bartering Scotland’s fishing rights for exemption for Scotland from joining the euro.

I did note, in response to an earlier letter from Mr Byron, that the EU might think our fish more significant than our shortbread. It is worth noting that SNP MEPs have been notable for their defence of the interests of Scottish fishermen.

The SNP is only a part of the wider independence movement in Scotland. No Scottish Government, of whatever party, would be likely to disregard Scottish fishing interests in the way UK Governments have done.

I believe an independent Scotland within the EU would not be required to join the euro, though circumstances in the future might lead it to wish to do so.
