Robert Anderson (Letters, 12 March) lists the things which have been most damaging to the Catholic Church over the years which, to his mind, include the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species, the sudden availability of birth control pills and “the disproportionate influence of current homosexual political ideology”.

It seems to me that an institution whose greatest enemies are scientific truth, women’s control of their own bodies and universal equality has problems all of its own.

Dr Stephen Moreton inadvertently demonstrates my point about the dangers of the new atheist fundamentalism (Letters, 13 March) when he equates those of us who believe that marriage is between a man and a woman with the racists of the BNP.

It is this kind of irrational, emotive name-calling which nullifies any reasonable discussion and gives the lie to the view that a secular humanist society will necessarily be a more tolerant society. Such intolerance in the name of tolerance is precisely what we are concerned about.
