Built to last

The mention of the frequency at which the tram rails have been laid and lifted (your report, 21 August) has reminded me that my grandfather left his unemployment in the
Borders at the turn of last
century to find employment with the Edinburgh Corporation, laying rails for the new tram system being created there.

The work was hard, most of it being done by hand. However, the system was finished more or less on time and most of the rails which he helped to lay were still in use when the next tram system was abandoned in 1947.

Seems something is wrong there, don’t you think?
