In broad terms, the Yes campaign was unsupported by two-thirds of the potential voting age population.

The scale of the defeat is partly explained by Gordon Brown’s intervention during the referendum debate.

In particular, his stunning oratory highlighted the weakness of the separatist arguments, a fine contribution that deserves mention alongside the negative comments of his detractors (Stan Hogarth, Letters, 4 February).
