Bible thumping

Have your say

John Coutts (Letters, 29 July) rightly berates those who seek “to take the rise out of religion”, saying they “ought first to understand the language thereof” for their misunderstanding of the 17th-century English of the King James translation of the Bible. Unfortunately, the latter itself often shows a similar misunderstanding of the languages in which the Bible was originally written.

Perhaps Mr Coutts should advocate that only those with this requisite linguistic ability should engage in theological debate.
