All in it together

Apparently, North Sea oil executives are demanding “an urgent rescue package to prevent a full-blown crisis” (your report, 12 January).

It seems the rescue package is limited to workers’ pay cuts and pleas for help to taxpayers.

Why shouldn’t highly paid industry executives and related business owners be included in the rescue package?

Oil and gas multimillionaires, mainly from the North-east, plus one billionaire, dominated last year’s Rich List.

How much wealth is available is shown by a recent example of a “golden hello” worth millions.

The new chief executive of one oil and gas firm will potentially get £14 million annually.

Arguably those with this kind of income and wealth are under a moral obligation to make a substantial contribution to a rescue package.
