Aids awareness

Yesterday was World Aids Day but it was barely mentioned in the press or television.

Television presenters hardly ever wear red ribbons.

Is there still a stigma attached to Aids? With 110,000 people living with HIV in the UK, this illness is not going to go away.

So why the almost deafening silence compared with the hysteria of the 1980s?

Back then, Princess Diana reached out in compassion to embrace an Aids patient, and this made a huge difference before attitudes began to slowly change.

I was responsible for organising events in my area and the majority of people I spoke to never knew what World Aids Day was. I find it very sad that this has happened and I hope that next year things will change for the better.
