Action needed

As a patient in one of the largest hospitals in Edinburgh, I observe the daily and nightly work of the doctors and nurses team.

These people are highly energetic, dedicated and kind. But one can’t help noticing that, at times, an element of desperation envelopes the staff, nurses especially, and running replaces walking. They face considerable pressure, as the often high hours of overtime confirm.

Also, one can not escape the depressing queues at A&E where waiting times exceed guidelines.

These observations reinforce the statistic that Scotland lacks 1,600 nurses (Christine Jardine, 28 February). This is a tragic situation. Is it not possible to organise a financial gesture to rectify it? This is the time for bold
action and not further debate.
