A Foreign Field

In this 100th and 70th anniversaries year, BBC TV has sadly missed the obvious occasion to show their moving and thought-provoking film A Foreign Field – about two British veterans and one American returning to Normandy on the 50th anniversary (played brilliantly by Alec Guinness, Leo McKern and John Randolph) and meeting a slightly mysterious woman (Lauren Bacall).

In fact, it should be shown this week every year.

Anent the poppy-wearing debate, the impact is diluted if worn too early (I suggest from 6 November) but it should continue through noon on 12 November, to reflect those inspiring and continuously forward-looking words “… and in the morning…” and “… for your tomorrow…”.
