It is very mystifying that MSPs have criticised the adversarial nature of the conflict between the angling sector and the fish farming industry since they themselves engage in adversarial politics on an almost daily basis (your report, 4 February). The only difference is that the angling sector refuses to even consider that anything else other than salmon farming could be responsible for the decline in wild salmon populations.
They even seem unwilling to accept mandatory catch and release to ensure that every returning fish gets an opportunity to breed and replenish the population.
Now that the Scottish Government has done a U-turn on salmon netting, perhaps they could also reconsider their position on the Aquaculture & Fisheries Bill since, as the MSPs point out, it is the relationship between the two sectors that ultimately needs to be addressed.
