IT IS amusing to see Scottish Labour MEP David Martin expressing thanks to former Conservative Party leader Margaret Thatcher (Letters, 29 January) even if it is for an effect she did not intend.
I, too, am grateful to Mrs Thatcher for antagonising the Scottish electorate sufficiently to ensure a Yes vote for devolution in the 1997 referendum. Her example lives on.
I wonder whether Jim Fairlie (Letters, 29 January) considers that countries such as Denmark and Finland have abandoned any pretence of sovereignty by joining the European Union, as he accuses the SNP of doing for Scotland?
I am sure that few Danes or Finns would consider that they have done so.
