Stubbing out

I am a non-smoker and all my family and friends are non-smokers, but I worked for 31 years in East Glasgow, where smoking was prevalent. Despite this, I do have some sympathy with the views expressed by Brian Monteith (Perspective, 21 January).

However, children in smoking households cannot avoid being exposed to cigarette smoke, and a recent article written in a medical journal by Christopher Millet of Imperial College in London showed a significant drop in the number of hospital admissions for childhood asthma since the legislation came into force, so the somewhat draconian anti-smoking regulations may well be justified.
