Following your article entitled “‘Postcode lottery’ warning over care” (31 January), I am writing to outline the need for access to specialist neuromuscular care in Scotland.
I am chair of the Cross- Party Group on Muscular Dystrophy in the Scottish Parliament (with support from the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign) which produced the Mackie Report in 2010 recommending improvements to neuromuscular service provision in Scotland.
The recommendations included calls for urgent service development in key areas of specialist multi-disciplinary neuromuscular care such as physiotherapy, respiratory care and cardiac care.
The group continues to assess the action which the Scottish Government and the NHS in Scotland has taken to address the gaps in specialist care for people affected by these muscle-wasting conditions.
