I SEE from your reports that the latest plan from our regulating and banning Scottish Government is to reduce the alcohol drink-drive limit from 80 to 50mg/ml, which it says will reduce road deaths by 17 per year. How this figure is calculated is anyone’s guess.
In areas like the Borders (and much of rural Scotland), pubs are already closing with alarming frequency. Many thousands of people every week will have one drink on the way home at their rugby club, football ground or after playing golf, safe in the knowledge that they are within the drink-drive limit. Under the proposed changes, this may no longer be the case.
The real problem lies with the substantial hardcore of drink drivers who ignore the current limit and are a lethal menace on our roads. Reducing the limit would do nothing to solve this problem. Not only will this proposal harm our rural pubs even further, but also all sporting clubs with licensed premises and the tourist industry. .
Alex Salmond had better watch himself as he is looking ever more like a modern-day Oliver Cromwell and we all know what happened to him!
