Morning people

A recent survey found that only 17 per cent of British people considered themselves “morning people” and two-thirds feel pretty unmotivated before lunch.

I recall a friend in the St Andrews University psychology department doing a similar survey among the undergraduates in the early 1960s. These were the days when one’s future depended a set of final examinations – the dreaded “five days in May” – and 95 per cent of all exams were held in the morning.

He did not reveal why he was asking the question so it caused quite a stir when he found that virtually everyone gaining a First or Upper Second was a “morning person”.
