RMT strike: ScotRail ticket examiners to join conductors' protest over pay from end of April

A rail trade union has announced that ScotRail ticket examiners will join conductors in strike action involving not working on Sundays from the end of April.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) informed ScotRail that ticket examiners in their company will take strike action of not working Sundays, not working rest days or higher grade duties from April 28 until further notice.

The news comes after hundreds of train ticket examiners voted to strike over being paid less for working on days off than drivers.

They work on electric trains in and around Glasgow, including on the line to Edinburgh via Bathgate.

In written correspondence to ScotRail, RMT wrote: “The General Secretary is instructed to inform the company and our members that as from 28th April 2021, our members will take strike action of not working Sundays, also not working rest days or higher grade duties until further notice.

“Furthermore, this NEC approves the continued industrial action of our Abellio ScotRail Conductor members, which is ‘not working Sundays and no rest day working or higher grade duties.’

“This will continue on Sunday 9th May until the current ballot mandate runs out. All relevant branches and regional council to be advised.”

On Tuesday, it was reported that trade union Unite called for strike action after they claimed that the rail company has withdrawn “a number of entitlements from workers including the Rest Day Working Agreement with Unite in April 2020 for engineering workers.”

Abellio ScotRail had responded by calling the support for the strike ‘reckless’.
