Farcical casting

Presumably, director Phyllida Lloyd thinks we all need cheering up after the Chancellor’s autumn statement, hence her proposal for 50/50 employment of actors and actresses necessitating gender-blind casting (your report, 7 December).

While “Twelve Angry Jurors” could be played straight, Ms Lloyd’s proposal would reduce many fine plays to farce, while pantomime, which relies on cross-gender casting, would no longer be pantomime.

There will also, of course, be a small problem with artistic freedom, but at least we can console ourselves waiting for a gender-blind remake of The Rocky
Horror Picture Show or Zulu.
