Electric line-up

There will soon be four
electrified rail routes between Edinburgh and Glasgow (Letters, 23 and 24 February).

The Shotts line is already partly electric, only requiring a small internal section between Holytown and Midcalder junction to be attended to. This is now included in the revised schedule. Electrification should cut 15 minutes off the all-stations
service, which must be the slowest in Scotland, thus allowing many Lanarkshire stations a half-
hourly frequency from 2015.

Maybe the Borders Railway will open as an electrified line, again allowing a high frequency commuter service from Gorebridge and Newtongrange.
