Blue Sundays

I agree with Colin C 
Maclean’s comments regarding free travel for a week on the trams (Letters, 20 February).
But sadly, I think he is being a bit disingenuous.

Yes, the initial free Sunday travel on the Blue Trains was a success, but it only came about as the original introduction of the Blue Trains in 1961 had been a disaster, with so many of them breaking down and on occasions catching fire that the whole fleet was withdrawn for nearly ten months and replaced by steam trains till the problems had been ironed out.

As a supporter of the trams, I hope all this is not a bad omen.
