One small step for Scotland

A LITTLE piece of Scotland came back down to earth today when it arrived in the city after being rocketed into space.

UK-born astronaut Nick Patrick returned to Edinburgh carrying a saltire flag that had previously flown over the Scottish Parliament.

He took the flag with him on board his first Nasa space mission as a tribute to his Scottish heritage.

Wester Hailes Education Centre student Katie McGoohan, 16 - who has just returned from a trip to the NASA space centre in Houston courtesy of Careers Scotland's Space School programme - helped the Yorkshire-born astronaut return the saltire safely to Holyrood.

They presented the Scottish Parliament's Presiding Officer George Reid MSP with an authenticity plaque to verify the flag's trip into space.
