On stand-by for global flu pandemic

HEALTH chiefs in the Lothians are on stand-by to implement swine flu measures after it emerged the World Health Organisation was preparing to announce a pandemic.

It was reported this morning that a crisis WHO meeting later today will see the threat level raised to six: a global pandemic.

Local NHS bosses previously said plans were in place so that once a pandemic was announced every person in the Lothians would be inoculated.

Such measures must be confirmed by the Scottish Government, which is waiting for the WHO official announcement.

The declaration of a pandemic would reflect a changed geographical status because the H1N1 infection has reached a certain number of countries.

Experts were this morning predicting that once colder weather begins to bite it was possible as many as one in four people in the UK will have to be off work as a result of swine flu.
