Oil giant plays down risk after rigs and HQ listed in chilling terror manifesto

BP HAS played down the threat to operations and staff in Scotland after they were named in the manifesto of alleged mass murderer Anders Breivik.

Breivik, who killed 76 people in Norway in a violent protest against multiculturalism and the spread of Islam in Europe, identified oil rigs as potential targets.

He named North Sea stations as well as BP's headquarters in Dyce, Aberdeen.

In chilling detail he wrote about how a successful attack would be carried out and the impact it would have.

"Choose targets wisely and ensure that the secondary effects will have devastating effects," he wrote.

"A one-man cell will have limited capabilities.

"However, providing a truck/boat loaded with explosives is within the capabilities of any single individual.

"It might take one-two years to safely acquire (without causing suspicion) the materials needed for this bomb but the resource vs effect ratio is magnificent. In theory a €50,000 operation has the potential to cause economical losses to our enemy in the range €1-3 billion."

His manifesto, A European Declaration of Independence, provides a horrifying image of such an attack.

"Successful attack on oil platform resulting in the collapse of two out of four foundational blocks; the platform will collapse and possibly sink," he wrote.

"Estimated primary and secondary damage (due to massive oil spills): total damage: €2 - 40 billion in total losses + massive shock effect which will temporarily destabilise the global crude price and stock indexes (particularly on a national level)."

A spokesman for BP said: "We're aware of the information but have been advised by the authorities that there is no specific threat that would require any new security measures.

"We take all matters regarding the safety and security of personnel extremely seriously and will continue to liaise with the authorities as necessary."
