Odeon chief outlines his hotel plans
THE owner of the former Odeon on Clerk Street has defended his plans to turn the Grade B listed building into a hotel.
In today's Evening News, Bruce Hare, of Duddingston House Properties, says such development is essential to keep old buildings in use, writing: "Edinburgh benefits from its wonderful architecture, yet it is also a wonderful place because our city centre is a living one, not a museum."
The building has stood empty since it closed as a cinema seven years ago. The hotel scheme would involve demolition of the main auditorium.
After complaints from Historic Scotland, the plan was shelved in May by a Scottish Government reporter.
If a successful bidder is not found, DHP hopes to proceed with the hotel plans.
