A BUILDING engulfed in flames turned to ice after fire crews battling the blaze in freezing temperatures in Chicago.

The abandoned warehouse was the site of the largest fire in the area for five years, As firefighters fought to extinguish the flames, the single-digit temperatures caused the water coming out of the hoses to freeze on impact.

The five-storey structure was effectively entombed in ice as a 200-strong crew struggled with odd conditions.

As icicles replaced flames, crews had to contend with a different set of problems, as they clambered up icy ladders and their clothes and equipment fell victim to the bitterly cold conditions.
