Loch Ness monster: Many sightings of an elusive beast

PAST images purporting to show the Loch Ness Monster have become so seared into the popular imagination that they are instantly recognisable across the globe.

The “Surgeon’s photo”, taken by London surgeon Robert Wilson in 1934, has come to symbolise sightings of the elusive aquatic phenomenon, which date as far back as AD565.

However, the picture was later revealed to have been a fake involving a toy submarine and a sea serpent’s head.

Other fanciful images include Peter O’Connor’s photograph, taken in 1960.

He is alleged to have got so close to the creature because of his Royal Marine Commando training enabling him to wade through water without making a sound.
