RETIRED retired space shuttle Endeavour set of on a journey unlike any of its previous missions when it left Los Angeles International Airport hangar onto the city streets.

Endeavour’s 12-mile road trip began shortly before midnight as it crawled at 2 miles per hour (3.2 km per hour) atop a massive wheeled transporter to its retirement home at the California Science Center on the edge of downtown.

After flying on 25 missions between 1992 and 2011, its first stop today was a strip mall parking lot where several hundred spectators gathered.

Endeavour will go on public display after arriving at its destination
