Mr Clegg’s wife Miriam Gonzalez Durantez has been given reindeer antlers and Rudolph’s red nose in the image, created by the three boys using an iPad to draw over a photograph of the couple on the sofa in their west London home.

The boys Antonio, 11, Alberto, nine and Miguel, four added a speech bubble showing their parents saying “Happy Christmas” and a decorated tree to complete the festive image.

The photo of a smiling Mr Clegg and his wife was taken by James Gourley, a recent photography graduate who was granted exclusive access to the family as part of a long-term project over the past year.

The use of an iPad marks a technological advance from 2011, when the two older boys created a colourful crayon drawing for the Deputy Prime Minister’s card.

Labour leader Ed Miliband’s card features a photo of him surrounded by his family on a trip to the beach.

The family portrait, taken by the Press Association’s chief political photographer Stefan Rousseau, shows a smiling Mr Miliband and wife Justine with their sons Daniel and Samuel.

It was taken during a walk along Brighton beach at the start of the Labour Party conference earlier this year as the family headed out to a play park before the heavy political agenda got under way.

Prime Minister David Cameron’s Christmas card is a black and white shot of him and wife Samantha with daughter Florence.
