Bananas’ fury hits minister

AN MP threw bananas at Taiwan’s agriculture minister yesterday during questions about falling prices.

MP Chen Ming-wen shouted, “Do you know how much bananas are?” before throwing the bunch at minister Chen Wu-hsiung in parliament.

Banana prices have become a emotive issue in Taiwan, with growers struggling to make a living as overproduction and competition from China cut prices.

Fights are common in the parliament. Last July, a brawl over a trade deal with China landed two MPs in hospital, one hit on the head by a flying clock.
