Obsolete threat

Your article “MoD: Russian bombers boost case for Union” (26 April) reminded me of my time as a teenage member of the Air Training Corps in the early 1960s.

Among many other useful skills, we had classes in aircraft recognition. I can therefore confirm that the Russian aircraft in the picture is a Tu-95 bomber, code named “Bear” by Nato. Even in 1961, that aircraft was described as obsolete – having first flown a decade earlier.

I hardly think that the threat from a clanking fleet of 60-year-old turboprops is a major issue in the independence debate and to make it so invites ridicule for those who support the Union, of whom I am one.
