Nurses group says patient Bill falls short

A MUCH anticipated Scottish Government Bill does not fully address the quality and safety of patient care, a nurses organisation has said.

The Edinburgh-based Royal College of Nursing said that while Holyrood was right to focus on the issue, the actual content did not produce many answers.

RCN director Theressa Fyffe said: "It is not clear how the Patients' Rights Bill is going to make any meaningful difference to the care that patients receive.

"Patients are entitled to safe and effective care, which the Scottish Government plans to enshrine in legislation. However, we ask the question: will this make any difference to the experience of patients or will it just summarise the existing mechanisms, such as NHS complaints' systems and the Public Services Ombudsman?"
