Nurses back campaign to legalise prostitution
NURSES have voted to campaign to legalise prostitution.
Members of the Edinburgh-based Royal College of Nursing Scotland joined colleagues from across the UK in voting for a campaign to allow small numbers of sex workers to work together legally.
At the RCN annual conference, 93 per cent voted for the move, to support the health needs and personal safety of sex workers.
Stuart McKenzie, RCN Scotland board member and community psychiatric nurse, said: "Sex workers are extremely vulnerable, so it is important that they receive the protection that the regulation of working collectively would provide them with."
Independent Lothians MSP Margo MacDonald said: "No-one is advocating prostitution as desirable, but for as long as there are people selling sexual services, they are entitled to appropriate health services, for example."
