Numbers rise at Heriot-Watt
THE recession has helped boost applications to one of Edinburgh's universities by more than 22 per cent, it was reported today.
Next month there will be 2,052 entrants to Heriot-Watt University, compared with 1,678 last year, as the number of applications to Scottish universities rises amid increasing job losses.
Special provision to increase places in science and technology subjects to help the economy means a specialist institution such as Heriot-Watt can benefit.
Mike Bates, director of recruitment and admissions at the university, said: "We still have vacancies in most areas because we operate a range of more specialist areas in terms of science, engineering and business management."
