Nuclear power 'still a good option'
THE head of the International Atomic Energy Agency yesterday said Japan's nuclear crisis does not undermine the value of nuclear power.
Yukiya Amano was speaking at Chernobyl, site of the world's worst nuclear accident. He was accompanied by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon and Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.
Mr Amano said many countries would continue to find nuclear power an important energy option, but that the world must do its utmost to ensure its safety.
His visit comes just days before the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.
Meanwhile, Austrian researchers are working on a project that could help predict the impact of potential accidents at nuclear power plants, it hwas announced yesterday.
The project, flexRISK, will encompass 258 nuclear facilities. It consists of an online database where users can compare and contrast the potential impact of accidents under differing weather conditions.
