Nostalgia: The life of lollipop men and women

WHAT would the health and safety bods say about that? Here's a lollipop man from 1954 wearing a flat cap and ordinary coat! Where's the fluorescent jacket? Doesn't he know he's dicing with death?

And those primary school children in Morningside – running across the road when there are hazards like tram lines just waiting to trip them up.

How times change. This week the News told how lollipop man John Hunter had been told to stop handing out sweets and giving high-fives due to safety fears.

It's not the first time lollipop people have been in the news – in 1985 they were protesting over cuts to their hours and warning children's lives could be put at risk. These photos show just how much more dangerous crossing the roads has become in recent decades. Imagine trying to stop the traffic on the A8 these days.
