Nostalgia: The paper trail on the Esk
THE MILLS and chimneys of the papermaking industry were once a common sight in the Lothians.
Papermaking in Midlothian dates from 1709 when the first mill on the Esk was established by the Queen's Printer Agnes Campbell.
Within 100 years, ten mills were established between Penicuik and Lasswade, mostly producing fine quality papers.
It is now 40 years since Eskmills closed and 33 years since Valleyfield and Pomathorn Mills closed. The era of papermaking ended with the closure of Dalmore in 2004.
From 6-10 October an exhibition in Penicuik Town Hall will look at Penicuik's history as 'The Papermaking Town'.
It will be open 10am-12pm, 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am-4pm on Saturday. The website www.penicuikpapermaking.org will become a virtual exhibition for the future.
