Noise of Sunday excavations is 'unbearable'

TRAM works are regularly being carried out from 7am on Sundays, according to city centre residents, who say the noise makes their lives unbearable.

A spokeswoman for Greenside Residents' Association said work was often carried out at the top of Leith Walk on Sundays without residents being given the seven days' notice required under the contractors' code of conduct.

She said: "Sunday is the one day that we get any respite from being woken up early by pneumatic drills, noisy trucks and guys shouting. If we don't even get one day, our life is unbearable."

The code of conduct says work can be carried out beyond normal working hours in some circumstances, but contractors are obliged to inform residents seven days beforehand.

A spokesman for tram company TIE said: "Last weekend there was a section of work undertaken on the Sunday. This was necessary as an excavation earlier in the week had been particularly complex."
