No more encores as pub ends band's gigs
THEY have entertained thousands as Edinburgh's longest running music residency.
Now though, the much-loved Stevie Agnew Band's Wednesday night gigs in a city centre bar – which have been running for 15 years – are no more.
The popular group have been told by management at the Blind Poet that their weekly slot is over, ending one of the city's cult live music attractions.
Band members said that while they were sad to leave, they appreciated the pub sticking by them through the years.
Bassist Chris Agnew said: "We had some great and funny times over the years, and not many gigs last 15 years.
"We will still keep in touch with them and I still run an open mic session there. We had some really busy nights and to be honest, the management stuck by us when it was quiet too and other pubs wouldn't have kept going with it.
"I suppose it's the end of an era in some ways, and we're grateful to the owners."
In the years since they began playing there they have all gone on to bigger and better things, but enjoyed returning to what was one of their favourite gigs.
Chris Agnew is now regarded as one of the best bassists in Scotland and tours with the likes of Dougie MacLean and reformed punk band The Rezillos.
His brother Stevie, singer and frontman, recently released his first EP. Both are sons of Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew.
Guitarist Ali Ferguson, who many say is the finest lead guitarist in Edinburgh, tours with former Genesis and Stiltskin frontman Ray Wilson.
He told the Evening News: "I suppose we knew it was always going to happen one day.
"It is a shame because it was a place close to our hearts.
"We will still go back in and see everyone there, the regulars and the staff."
Fans who have attended the West Nicolson Street pub religiously over the years said the decision was disappointing.
Luke Fisher, 32, a senior grants officer from Newington, said: "The Blind Poet on a Wednesday was always a highlight of the week – incredibly gifted musicians playing in a local pub to a loyal crowd.
"I can often remember standing back in amazement that I did not have to pay to get in.
"It is a great shame that in the current climate the first thing to go is one of the things that brought people through the door.
"In my opinion the Blind Poet has now lost its unique selling point – an amazing band playing fantastic music every week."
The manager of the pub did not wish to comment on the decision.
