NINE people have been rescued from a blazing block of flats in Kirkcudbright.

Firefighters led the residents to safety after two fire engines attended the scene at Sunnybrae in the Dumfries and Galloway town at about 1.10am today.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said crews found a “well-developed fire” in the building when they arrived and two more fire engines were sent to deal with the incident.

An SFRS spokesman said: “Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus sets have entered the smoke filled flats, with a number of firefighting water jets, to deal with the fire situation. Nine residents have been guided to a place safety out with the building.”

The fire crews were still on the scene at 6.30am.
