NHS spends £21,000 on translating documents
TRANSLATING documents into foreign languages cost NHS Lothian more than £20,000 last year.
Leaflets and posters are produced in 23 different languages for communities in the Lothians, figures show.
The cost has risen year-on-year, as more nationalities move to the Capital. The 21,353 spent last year also includes tapes, braille and large-print documents.
Statistics released to the Evening News under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that Polish accounts for the most documents, with 8000 being spent in 2007-08.
Spanish, French, Chinese and German are also among the languages that cost more than 1000. Around 23 was spent creating documents in Portuguese, with 46 each being spent on Hindi and Bengali.
Last year the health board spent 15,000 on translation services. New languages last year included Vietnamese, Greek, Farsi and Latvian.
