NHS may take police cell role

MEDICAL responsibilities for people in custody in the Lothians could eventually be transferred to NHS health workers, the police have said.

In a presentation to the Lothian and Borders police board this week, members will be told that the transfer of some duties to NHS Lothian health workers in cells has been a success.

And, in a recommendation, Chief Constable David Strang admits the long-term plan could be for the health board to control all medical services for those taken into custody.
