New look for 'symbol of decline' pub
DEVELOPERS have been given the go-ahead to transform an iconic Craigmillar pub into a temporary art gallery to facilitate its restoration.
Parc Craigmillar said the deterioration of The White House, a 1936 Art Deco roadhouse, had become "a symbol of the decline of Craigmillar".
They have made its restoration the centrepiece of its regeneration project, and have teamed up with Craigmillar Community Arts to host a historical photo exhibition ahead of its full restoration.
A report by council head of planning John Bury, which accompanies listed building consent for temporary alterations to transform it into an art gallery, reveals the dire extent of the pub's decline and its potential for restoration.
He said: "The building is in very poor condition, having been derelict for many years, and prior to this having suffered from several unsympathetic 'modernisations'.
"The building is currently painted pale green, black and cream, belying its name. Windows and doors are boarded up and trees are beginning to grow from the gutters.
"The interior shows extensive areas of water ingress, and at least one fire, but retains a pair of fine period interiors.
"The stairs are also of some quality and interest, with a curious double handrail effect."
