New Fringe record as 1.7 million see shows
A RECORD 1.7 million Fringe tickets were sold this year, with Fuerzabruta the most popular show.
The spectacle - featuring dramatic aerial stunts performed in a huge tent by Ocean Terminal - beat the Lady Boys of Bangkok to the top spot. The popular drag show had been the most popular show for the past five years.
Bosses said last night that 1,697,293 tickets had been sold through the box office in 2007, up 10.8 per cent on last year.
There were 31,000 performances of 2050 shows at 250 venues. An estimated 18,626 performers appeared on stage.
The Underbelly saw a 25 per cent increase in sales at its Cowgate and Bristo Square theatres, while the Pleasance and Gilded Balloon also saw a rise in sales.
William Burdett Coutts, the Assembly director, voiced concerns this year that the Fringe had got too big, with audiences spread too thinly.
But Fringe director, Jon Morgan, said: "If audiences continue to come, the festival will continue to grow."
