New system set to detect 'silent killer'
A TOP surgeon from the Lothians has helped developed a screening programme which could save thousands of lives.
Rod Chalmers, a vascular consultant at the ERI, helped create the first men-only detection tool, which should identify men at risk from abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs).
The system was developed purely for men because they are seven times more likely to suffer from them. All men over the age of 65 will now be offered the screening to identify the aneurysms before they rupture or other problems begin. If the vessel ruptures it can lead to massive, often fatal, blood loss.
Dr Chalmers said: "A screening programme will allow us to save thousands of lives."
