New scheme to aid doctors

NHS LOTHIAN has become one of the first health boards in Scotland to appoint assistant practitioners to carry out tasks traditionally done by GPs and nurses.

Four members of staff have completed the training and are ready to take on the roles that could take pressure off doctors.

Chemotherapy nurse specialist Donna McGowan said: "The assistant practitioners are delivering supportive therapies to patients, allowing the registered nurse more time to deliver more complex chemotherapy treatment."
