Speaking to Gina Davidson at the film’s world premiere in Edinburgh on Monday, Welsh said that director Jon S Baird and James McAvoy, who plays anti-hero Bruce Robertson in the movie, were key to the film’s success.

He said: “If you didn’t have a really bold director and a really strong lead actor... [the film] could’ve been really bad.”
